The Golden Girls was originally aired on NBC from 1985 - 1992. It was one of NBC's most popular comedy series, and is still shown widely around the world. It spawned two other shows, "Empty Nest" and "The Golden Palace". The series was created by Susan Harris. The Golden Girls captured a broad range of viewers with its creative, original, and entertaining comedy episodes. There were 180 Golden Girls episodes created.
Episodes of The Golden Girls are destined to become classics. All shows are written in such a way they make you feel as though you're watching members of your family. The characters are easy to relate to. The Golden Girls received the Viewers for Quality Television award two years in a row, 1987 - 1988.
The Golden Girls dealt with a number of serious issues in a light-hearted way. Dorothy was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. Rose was scared she might have caught AIDS from a blood transfusion.
The theme song, "Thank You For Being a Friend", was written by Andrew Gold. It was sung by Cindy Fees.
The series ended when Dorothy remarried. Stan, her ex-husband, chauffeured her to the wedding in a limousine.
The Golden Palace was aired on CBS during 1992 -1993. It was not nearly as successful as The Golden Girls. The series plot focused on Blanche, Rose, and Sophia running a hotel in downtown Miami. It was canceled after one season.

The girls live together at 6151 Richmond Street, Miami, Florida. The house was originally owned by Blanche, who was generous enough to give her roommates partial ownership. But, she only did so after problems with city rent regulations. The city firemen apparently knew the address well, because they were skeptical about answering Blanche's calls.
A scale model of the original house used in the series is part of a tour in Walt Disney World's MGM Studios. The Empty Nest model house is also located nearby.
The Golden Girls was made by Touchstone Pictures and is distributed by Buena Vista Television.
